Somber observance in Florida

Florida - Residents and community officials braved the chilly weather last Friday to honor the veterans of all wars and all branches of the service. “There is no title more prestigious than that of veteran of the United States Armed Forces,” Village of Florida Mayor James Pawliczek said at the beginning of his remarks. He concluded by expressing his gratitude on behalf of the community to “all veterans, deceased, present and future.” Standing at the podium just behind the unique Veterans Monument on North Main Street, American Legion Post #1250 Commander James Sosler introduced several Legion members who read excerpts from the American Legion Ceremony Handbook. Several World War II veterans were in attendance, and although their numbers are dwindling, their enthusiasm and dedication remain as strong as when they served their country. A ceremony to dispose of old and tattered American flags was later held outside the Legion meeting rooms. As a point of interest, the memorial pavers that have been placed in the area in front of the Veterans Monument are still available. For further information contact Robert Scott at 845-651-7221.
