Bear Mountain - More than 1,400 people gathered on a rainy Saturday evening on Sept. 30 at Bear Mountain State Park to Light The Night® for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in its fight against blood cancers. The two-mile fundraising walk helped to raise about $125,000 for the organization. Among those people were 64 walkers, including adults and children, who collectively raised more $9,000 on behalf of four-year-old Simone Schultz of Warwick, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in June 2006. Simone will be on medication for the next two years to fight this disease and prevent its return. Light The Night® walks will take place in communities around the country, with teams of co-workers, families and friends walking together in twilight holding illuminated balloons - white for survivors and red for supporters. The funds raised help the society support research and provide patient services throughout Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.
