‘Shoeboxes for Soldiers'

At Park Avenue Elementary, the students in Diane Connolly’s first-grade class have been learning about the different ways people celebrate the holidays. They learned that it is a time to be thoughtful of others and to express feelings through gifts. When Mrs. Connolly received an e-mail asking for people willing to create and send holiday packages to American troops serving in Iraq, she knew her class would rise to the occasion. The project, called “Shoeboxes for Soldiers,” was a big success and “thank you” notes already are beginning to be received by the students from the appreciative recipients.
