Scleroderma support group discusses nutrition and weight control May 26
Warwick At the May 26 Scleroderma Support Group Meeting attendees will discuss the importance of proper nutrition and weight control. They will share their successes and their difficulties. As scleroderma often causes difficulties with hand mobility and dexterity, cooking can often be a challenge. Attendees are encouraged to bring with them any special eating ware or cooking utensils that they find useful. Nutrition is important for everyone, but for those living with illness it is of special importance. Bodies require proper nutrition to fight disease. In the case of those living with scleroderma, there is often difficulty in receiving the proper amount of nutrition from the foods eaten because digestive problems are common, and foods are often limited. Also, pain in the joints and muscles are common. And, as pain increases, the ability to continue a normal exercise routine decreases. With this decrease in activity, weight gain is common and the struggle to maintain a healthy diet and exercise program begins. Scleroderma Support Group meetings are held the fourth Saturday of every month at St. Anthony’s Community Hospital in Warwick, from 10 a.m. until noon. Each month the group focuses on a different topic of concern, providing attendees with information as well as a chance to share their experiences and concerns.
