Schervier resident named finalist in national contest

WARWICK The contest had thousands of entries, but only 10 finalists were selected. One of those finalists was Caryl McCoy, a resident at Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility on the Bon Secours Warwick Healthcare Campus. Last fall, when a group of residents went out for a day trip with their director of recreation Kari Call, they stopped for lunch at Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse in Middletown. They learned that the corporation was sponsoring a special event photo contest in honor of the 40th anniversary of the chain, headquartered in Mountainside, N.J. Since this luncheon was a special event for the group, Call took a photograph of McCoy, who had ordered her favorite entrée, lobster tails, to be washed down with a Margarita cocktail. Call entered the picture in the contest. “I didn’t finish the cocktail,” states McCoy. Part of the contest also involved submitting a letter and a caption with each photograph. Complementing her shrug and palms up pose, McCoy titled the photograph, “Good food, good drinks, what more could I want?” In the accompanying letter, she described herself as a long-term resident of a nursing home. McCoy praised the day trips, and mentioned that lunch at Charlie Brown’s was a frequent stop. She wrote, “We enjoy the varied-menu, especially the lobster, which I absolutely love.” On April 14, McCoy received a letter from Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse that she had been named a finalist in the nationwide contest, and had won a dinner for two. “I’m inviting Eileen Chappell, one of my good friends here at Schervier, and I’m ordering lobster,” said McCoy. “Kari helped me pose for the photo, and she gave me good suggestions for my letter. We both had a lot of fun doing this, and I’m thrilled to be a finalist.” Day trips and luncheons at local restaurants are not just pleasant excursions away from the daily routine at Schervier, they also provide recreational therapy. “Therapeutic recreation is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care of individuals receiving health and human services,” commented Call.
