WARWICK — The Yankees were at home playing Tampa Bay on Monday, April 2, and around 2 p.m. they were winning 3n1. The crowd cheered. It was the opening day of the 2007 baseball season and it was standing room only in the recreation room at Schervier Pavilion, a skilled nursing facility on the Warwick Campus of Bon Secours Charity Health System. A large number of residents had gathered to watch the game. And they were also there to symbolically toss out the first ball, talk about baseball history and enjoy hot dogs with mustard and relish, while celebrating another “Opening Day of Baseball” party. One of the highlights of the party that brought more than a few laughs was a short skit performed by Kari Call, director of recreation, and Roselle Egan, recreation aide. The two re-enacted the famous baseball routine, “Who’s on first?” For those too young to remember the humorous exchange between 1940s and ’50s era comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, the laughs came from the confusion that arises when the comics discuss a team of baseball players with names like Who, What and Tomorrow. Spectator sports are important at Schervier Pavilion. They offer an opportunity for residents to get together, root for their favorite teams and talk about one game while looking forward to the next one. Opportunities to participate in traditions like the “Opening Day of Baseball” party and other events are always available to the residents at Schervier Pavilion. “We publish a calendar every month that’s filled with interesting and entertaining things to do throughout the day as well as some evenings,” said Call, who is a certified therapy recreation specialist. “Therapeutic recreation is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care of individuals receiving health and human services at our facility.” Additional information about Schervier Pavilion can be obtained by calling 987-5750 or by visiting www.stanthonycommunityhosp.org.
