Loch Sheldrake — Sullivan County Community College will host a community action forum on global warming at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, in the Seelig Theatre. Dr. Melissa Everett, executive director of Sustainable Hudson Valley, is the guest speaker. cxEverett is a counselor, writer, leadership developer and organizational strategist. She received her doctoral degree in sustainable development from Erasmus University in the Netherlands and has served in her current position since early 2004. Everett recently attended a training session with former Vice President Al Gore and a team of climate change scientists and educators in Nashville. At this session, Dr. Everett learned how to present a version of Gore’s presentation on the effects of - and solutions for - global warming. At SCCC’s forum, she will present practical steps to fight global warming that result in making communities more attractive places to live. Everett will also explore the science of global warming and how it impacts our region, from flooding to changes in wildlife habitat. With this foundation, she will also present a series of practical steps for households and communities to follow. These include innovations in energy, transportation, and landscaping - including the expansion of gardens, parks, forests and green roofs. Sustainable Hudson Valley is spearheading a “Cool Communities” initiative for the region’s cities, towns and villages, providing technical assistance and support for ambitious “cooling” initiatives. The organization also works with The Empowerment Institute to distribute its “Low Carbon Diet: A Thirty-Day Program to Lose 5,000 Pounds” for households and neighborhoods. SCCC’s Community Action Forum is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Kathryn Scullion in SCCC’s Division of Natural and Health Sciences at 845-434-5750, x4447.
