Read on, please: Literacy volunteers looking for tutors
Middletown - Literacy Volunteers of Western Orange County (LVWOC) was able to infuse its program with 30 new tutors at its training workshop this spring. More tutors are needed, however, so a summer workshop has been scheduled. LVWOC improves lives through literacy. Adults who understand and speak English are taught to read and write the language. Adult speakers of other languages are taught to understand, speak, read and write English. The summer workshop includes a required two-hour orientation, an independent reading assignment and four evening classes. Orientation will be held in the Polais Room of the Southwinds Retirement Home at 70 Fulton St. in Middletown on Tuesday, July 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Reading will be assigned at the orientation. The four classes will be held in the Polais Room on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Aug. 1, 3, 8 and 10 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Anyone considering becoming a trained English tutor this summer is urged to call LVWOC at 341-5460 or e-mail baclvwoc@ warwick.net by July 21 to register by giving your name, telephone number and mailing address. If you can read, you can teach someone else how to read.
