Warwick — In celebration of “Be Kind to Animals Week,” the Warwick Valley Humane Society is hosting a rabies clinic and bite prevention workshop. The rabies clinic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, at the animal shelter, located at 48 Public Works Drive (off Kings Highway). The fee is $10 per pet. All pets must be restrained on leashes or in carriers. All proceeds will benefit the homeless animals at the shelter. Rabies vaccinations are required in New York State for all dogs, cats, and ferrets. “Keeping your pet up to date on their rabies inoculation keeps your pet, your family and your neighborhood safe,” said animal control officer Becky Hanlon, who handles the many bite reports reported to the shelter. “There is a 10-day confinement period required by the Orange County Health Department for any animal that has a reported bite. If the pet is not up-to-date on the rabies vaccination, then the 10-day confinement must be at the shelter or a veterinary hospital at the owner’s expense.” The dog bite prevention workshop for adults and children will be held at noon on Saturday, May 12. Dr. Sonja Stell, a certified dog trainer and animal behaviorist, will conduct the workshop along with Suzyn Barron, the humane society president. In lieu of an admission fee, the society is requesting donations of shelter supplies: bleach, simple green cleaner, laundry/dish detergent, paper plates, paper towels, large contractor bags, and disposable gloves. Because of the pet food recall, the shelter is not accepting any food or treats at this time. In honor of “Be Kind to Animals Week,” the humane society is asking families to spend more time appreciating their companion animals. Here are a few ways to show kindness to the animals that don’t live in your house: • Encourage family and friends to spay or neuter their pets • Report animal abuse or neglect • Volunteer at your local shelter • Speak out on the importance of respecting animals • Become a sponsor for a homeless animal = • Adopt a homeless pet The Warwick Valley Humane Society handles animal control for the village and town of Chester.
