A veterans’ memorial at the Polish Legion of American Veterans Hall on Pulaski Highway in Pine Island recently received a major boost. John Witterschein, CEO of Pharmline Inc., donated $2,500 to the fundraising effort. Witterschein, at left, and PLAV Post 16 Commander Wayne Miller hold an enlarged replica of the check; post board member Roger Doty is in center. This is the largest single donation from a business, Miller said. He also gave credit to Rich Majewski of Allied Excavating for demolishing the former telephon company building that occupied the site and to Pine Island School Principal Jane Hamburger for organizing fund drives among the students to help the PLAV post. About half of the $30,000 needed has been raised. Plans call for a monument, two flagpoles and lighting. (Photo by David Gordon)
