Pine Island student wins national environmental award

Warwick - Maya Henderson earned a “Grand National” award in the Young America Division at the National Junior Horticultural Association (NJHA) Convention, held Oct. 6 - 9, in Omaha, Neb. Her project, submitted in the environmental awareness category, studied the roles of honeybees play in plant pollination. Maya, the six-year old daughter of Eric and Annette Henderson, is a first grader at Pine Island Elementary School. Founded in 1935, NJHA administers programs to help young people develop understanding and skills in the growing science of horticulture. The Young America division, for youth ages 5-14, develops students’ interests in gardening, plant propagation, environmental awareness and experimental horticulture.
