Pine Island - The Butterfly Garden/Habitat at the Pine Island Park will be dedicated on Monday, June 20, at 10:30 a.m. When the Warwick Valley Gardeners decided to create this garden at the park off Kay Road they did not think it would turn into such a community project. Plants from the Pine Island Elementary School’s butterfly garden, which will be closing at the end of the school year, will be moved down to the park, insuring that the children of the area will continue to have a connection to the school. The Kids Club House is creating 25 cement stepping stones to be used as pathways through the garden. Girl Scouts and members of the 4H Club will be helping to dig up and plant a variety of plants. The garden will include host plants, plants that larvae feed on and nectar plants, plants that provide food for the adult. The intent of the garden was to add beauty to the park and be an educational area for children and adults, but the added benefit is the tremendous sense of community participation and cooperation.
