Peace, war, remembrance

Peace activists from Warwick took part in a march for peace in New York City on Sunday, March 18, marking the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. The organizers, United for Peace and Justice, demand an immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. And then on Monday, March 19, 30 people stood on the corner of Lewis Park in Warwick in a gently falling snow, holding candles and calling for an end to the war in Iraq. The vigil was one of thousands of local vigils sponsored by the Internet organization Moveon.org. Vigilers took turns reading eye-witness accounts of young troops who have died as a result of the conflict. Moved to speak by these accounts, Jo Hull of Warwick spoke with great sadness of a member of her own extended family who was killed in Iraq last November. Added Pat Foxx: “I feel great sorrow and grief for the suffering this war has caused for all the people touched by it. And we all are feeling the effects.” (Photo provided by Patricia DeBruhl)
