WARWICK —The Recreation Therapy Department at Schervier Pavilion recently purchased a Nintendo Wii video game for the residents. “They love it,” said Kari Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist (CTRS). “Games and entertainment have an important value in long term care at Schervier Pavilion. This game is wonderful for improving eye and hand coordination and it’s fun.” No bigger than a small traditional remote control, the wireless remote control device measures movement in all directions and at all speeds. In a tennis game, for example, it serves as your racket as you swing away. In driving games it serves as a steering wheel, allowing you to swerve to avoid obstacles. When you release your bowling ball you may score a strike, a spare or something else depending on your timing. As recreation director at the Pavilion, Call’s job is to provide recreation resources and opportunities for both the long and short-term residents of the skilled nursing home in order to maintain and improve their health and well being. “Therapeutic recreation,” she said, “is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care of individuals receiving health and human services.” All programs at Schervier Pavilion are designed to meet the psychosocial and physical needs of the residents with activities that are not only enjoyable but are also intended to achieve this goal.
