On Main Street or in D.C., people long for peace

Warwick - On the same day that thousands of peace protesters descended on Washington, D.C., demanding an end to the war in Iraq, members of the Warwick Women in Black stood and maintained a silent vigil for peace on Main Street in Warwick. “We who stayed home join many others around the country as a presence for peace in our communities,” said Alice McMechen, one of the vigilers who held a photograph of Dr. Frederick Franck’s sculpture, “War.” Many passers-by gave the thumbs up sign. “I think it’s time to light a fire under the Democrats about the war issue,’ said Roslyn Fassett. “The people of this country have said they want an end to war. We are going to hold the politicians accountable.” The Women in Black will hold their next vigil for peace on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. outside Lewis Park on Warwick.
