Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain noshes on Bobby Matuszewski’s pierogies and Kielbasa Pine Island - On Sept. 19, Anthony Bourdain, host of the popular Travel Channel show, “No Reservations,” spent his day making sausage, cooking and conversing with chef and store owner Bobby Matuszewski. Bourdain is a world-renowned chef, author, TV celebrity, and world traveler. The show’s focus is on food, travel, and unique locations. The five-hour visit at Quaker Creek was part of an episode that features the bounty of the Hudson Valley and also included stops at Ixtapa Taco Truck on Broadway in Newburgh, Mohonk Mountain House and the Bradley Farm, both located in New Paltz, the Rondout Bay Marina in Kingston and Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, where Bourdain went to school. The show airs Monday evening on the Travel Channel. Two production crews spent five hours independently filming Quaker Creek as well as the beauty of the Pine Island area. According an article in New York magazine about the trip, author Daniel Maurer writes: “… Tony heads to the Black Dirt region of the Hudson Valley. An area that was once practically nothing but swamp, has been drained to uncover rich soil — thanks to Polish emigrants whose descendants now inhabit the little town of Pine Island. What was once just a general store is now a popular Polish restaurant called the Quaker Creek store. “Here, Tony meets Bobby Matuszewski, whose grandfather opened the general store in 1947. Bobby feeds Tony pierogies stuffed with potatoes and onions, fresh from the frying pan. “But what Tony really came here for is the sausages — knockwurst, bratwurst, and homemade Kielbasa filled with smoked bacon, Granny Smith apple, onion, and seasoning and then slow-cooked in sauerkraut.” The filming wrapped up, said Diane Matuszewski, “with a scene of Bourdain, her husband and family sharing a meal they prepared together, while talking about the treasure we have locally.”
