New age of mathematics' comes to Warwick Valley High School
83 students inducted into first Orange County chapter of int’l mathematics honor society Warwick - Eighty-three “bright, energetic and smart” Warwick Valley High School students are the first in Orange County to become members of the international mathematics honor society, Mu Alpha Theta. The induction ceremony took place on May 16 at the high school auditorium. Christina DeClary, director of Mathematics and Business, opened the ceremony with a short speech in which she praised the school district as “once again being ahead of the curve and a trendsetter” in Orange County. “These students are bright, energetic and smart,” she said, as she explained the process of application and guidelines for choosing candidates. Ray Mark, the high school’s Department of Mathematics chairperson, likened the induction of the first Warwick members of Mu Alpha Theta to a “new age of mathematics” at the high school. The Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society is dedicated to inspiring interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics among high school and two-year college students. To that end, members of the Warwick chapter of the honor society will soon begin a peer tutoring program at the high school. In fact, many members of the new math honor society were busy signing up for tutoring sessions immediately following their induction ceremony.
