Muslim leader to speak at Temple Beth Shalom

Florida - Imam Salahuddin M. Muhammad, the leader of Masjid Al Ikhlas, the Islamic Learning Center of Orange County, will speak on the topic “We Are Family” on Thursday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Shalom in the village of Florida, N.Y. Following his talk, the floor will be open to discussion. Everyone is invited to enjoy dessert afterward as the discussion continues on an informal level. Since 1986, Muhammad has been the resident Imam of Masjid Al Ikhlas, now located in Newburgh, where he is known for his “Do It Now” attitude and zeal for establishing Islam. As a Muslim leader, he is known for his active role in battling drugs, crime, gang violence and prostitution within Orange County and the Mid-Hudson Valley region. A student of Islam since 1964, he is recognized as a Islamic leader and propagator of the Islamic religion in the region and throughout the state. Muhammad received a bachelor’s degree in social sciences from SUNY New Paltz and a master’s degree in theology and counseling from the New York Theological Seminary. He holds a graduate certificate in Islamic Chaplaincy from Hartford Seminary, where he is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry degree. He also has a certificate in clinical pastoral education. Muhammad has completed hundreds of hours in Islamic studies and training at the Islamic Teaching Center in Indiana, where he received certification in Imam training, the science of Qur’an, and many other Islamic sciences. Among his experiences, the Imam has served as a Muslim chaplain for the New York State Department of Correctional Services, working in maximum, medium and minimum security prisons, county jails and at a psychiatric center.
