Millspaugh Furniture expands its business to Warwick

WARWICK - Late last year Ken and Debbie Kroslak closed the doors of their furniture business, The Country Life, one of the largest and most popular stores in the Village of Warwick. A fear in the business community at that time, especially during this tough economy, was that the historic building at 40 Main St. would remain vacant and create a bad impression for the normally vibrant downtown Warwick. Many of those concerns soon disappeared, however, when business owners learned that Millspaugh Furniture, a well established and highly respected brand name in the Hudson Valley, would soon occupy the building. Millspaugh opened its Warwick branch in February and on Saturday, March 27, Mayor Michael Newhard and Michael Johndrow, executive director of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce, joined the Millspaugh family and showroom staff for the store’s official grand opening. “We’ve had Warwick in our sights for many years,” said Keith Millspaugh, the fifth generation family member to run the business. “And when we learned this fine building was about to become available, we seized the opportunity.” Millspaugh Furniture is also celebrating its 152nd anniversary this year. Founder Theron L. Millspaugh was introduced to crafting furniture and coffins at age 17. After his employer, John Woolsey, passed away, he purchased the business from Woolsey’s widow on April 1, 1858. The business quickly outgrew its small shop on Oak Street in Walden and in 1866, Millspaugh erected a three-story brick building on Walden’s Main Street. That facility, now very much expanded, remains the business headquarters. Millspaugh opened its second store in 1998 in Poughkeepsie and in 2005 moved from that location to a 27,000 square foot space in the Hudson Plaza on Route 9, also in that same city. “All these years we have focused on solid wood furniture and comfortable yet durable upholstered furniture,” said Keith Millspaugh. “Our focus on furniture that is built to last along with the Millspaugh philosophy of trying to delight every customer has been essential to our success. We chose to expand to Warwick to make the Millspaugh Furniture shopping experience more convenient to southern Orange County and beyond.”
