WVHS Class of 2013 valedictorian and salutatorian

WARWICK — Next week’s Warwick Valley High School graduation ceremonies will be led by Valedictorian Thomas Krahulik and Salutatorian Samuel Sander Effron.
Valedictorian: Thomas Krahulik
With the highest rank in this year’s senior class, Thomas Krahulik has been named valedictorian of the Warwick Valley High School Class of 2013. While maintaining his academic excellence throughout high school, Thomas has also been very involved in a variety of clubs and activities. He is the treasurer of the Warwick chapter of the National Honor Society and has been the Warwick Valley High School Band Treasurer for two years.
A talented musician, Thomas plays tuba in the WVHS Honors Wind Ensemble and has participated in the NYSSMA Solo Festival, All-County Band and the Hudson Valley Honors Youth Wind Ensemble.
Thomas is a member of Project Speak Up, a drug and alcohol awareness group, the WVHS Varsity Golf team, is a tutor at the local library and a certified water safety instructor and lifeguard.
For the past five years, Thomas has been the student producer of the Warwick Valley Middle School Drama Club, producing “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Music Man,” “Oliver,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Peter Pan.” This year, Thomas was also student producer for the Warwick Valley High School Drama Club’s production of “Les Miserables.”
He will attend the Honors College of Stony Brook University in the fall, majoring in physics with plans to continue on to graduate school and research opportunities.
Salutatorian: Samuel Sander Effron
Samuel Sander Effron has been named salutatorian of Warwick Valley High School’s Class of 2013, and is ranked second in this year’s senior class.
While a student at Warwick Valley High School, Samuel holds the position of president of the mathematics honor society, Mu Alpha Theta. He is also the vice president of Warwick’s chapter of National Honor Society and vice president of Monroe Temple BETY Youth Group.
Samuel is also the co-captain of the WVHS Academic League team.
Samuel is the Low Brass section leader of the Warwick Valley High School Honors Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and Symphony Orchestra. In the past four years, he has participated in numerous NYSSMA solos and has been part of various musical ensembles, including All-County Jazz Band, Band, and Orchestra, Area All-State Band, All-State Symphonic Band and in the Hudson Valley Honors Youth Wind Ensemble.
In December 2012, Samuel became an Eagle Scout.
In June 2012 he was presented with the Patrick S. Gilmore Band Award, and in July 2012 he was named an AP Scholar with Honor.
He will be attending Brown University this fall in Providence, R.I.
He plans on concentrating in either biology or biochemistry, and then continuing on to graduate school.
