Workshop to be held to help immigrant students go to college

NEWBURGH — The YWCA of Orange County is holding a college workshop to help DACA recipients and undocumented students go to college.
DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an immigration policy that allows some individuals who were brought to the United States illegally as children to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation and become eligible for a work permit in the U.S.
The workshop, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, will provide information on how to apply to college with or without papers, scholarships available for young people with DACA or undocumented, and local programs available to help apply to college.
Special guests will include Newburgh Free Academy Counselor Bertha Hurtado, Dutchess Community College Admissions Counselor Steven Posada and Orange County Community College Director of Admissions and Recruitment Maynard Schmidt.
The workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Board of Education Auditorium, 124 Grand St., Newburgh.
The snow date will be Saturday, January 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The presentation will be mostly in Spanish.
The YWCA of Orange County, founded in Newburgh in 1888, has provided leadership opportunities for women for more than a century. The group has a mission statement of “eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all."
