Warwick’s Halloween spirit thrives

WARWICK — The spirit of Halloween was alive and well as ghosts, goblins, witches and an assortment of movie, cartoon and even more creative characters assembled in the Warwick Middle School parking lot on Saturday, Nov. 3, for what was described as a “boo-fest” titled “Trunk or Treat.”
The Village of Warwick Recreation Department and Warwick Lions sponsored the event for children up to the age of 13.
People who arrived with their automobile trunks decorated and filled with treats for the children were asked to set up in the Middle School Parking lot. The costumed trick or treaters arrived after noon and made the rounds of all the parked cars just as they would have visited homes on Halloween. And around 1:30 p.m. there was a traditional Halloween parade and costume contest divided by age groups.
Refreshments were provided by Warwick ShopRite along with apples from Pennings Orchard.
This year’s Halloween Parade, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, had been another victim of Hurricane Sandy.
Since Halloween fell only one day after Sandy caused numerous local power outages and downed trees, officials decided to cancel the popular event.
By an odd coincidence, last year’s Halloween parade, which was held, came on the heels of a freak snowstorm..
“We have to do this again,” said Mayor Michael Newhard, who said he was pleased by the huge turnout and the favorable comments by those who participated.
