WARWICK — It began New Year's Eve when the Apple Drop ushered in 2019 and also a yearlong series of events to celebrate the Warwick Volunteer Fire Department's 150th anniversary.
And on Saturday evening, Jan. 26, 156 local citizens helped support the volunteer firefighters and celebrate this milestone at the first event, a "Bowling with the Braves," 150th anniversary fund raiser.
The event, held at the Pin Street Warwick bowling alley at 154 Route 94 South, featured three games of bowling, shoes, music, a sandwich and refreshments. And there were also door prizes, raffles, a 50/50 and a Tricky Tray.
The final tally is not available at this time but is estimated at $4,000, which will be used to fund this year's 150th anniversary celebrations.
The history of the Warwick Volunteer Fire Department goes back to 1869 when the Excelsior Fire Engine Co. No 1 was organized in the Village of Warwick.
That was followed throughout the years by the formation of the Florida Fire Department, the Goodwill Hook and Ladder Company, the Raymond Hose Co. 2 and Engine Company No. 3 along with other companies formed in Greenwood Lake, Pine Island and Amity.
The next 150th Anniversary event will be "Coffee with the Bravest" on February 16. The get-together will be held at Caffe A' La Mode, No. 1 Oakland Ave., in the Village of Warwick, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
And there is no agenda. It's simply an opportunity to meet your local firefighters over a cup of coffee.
