Warwick Valley Humane Society slashes adoption fees for cats

WARWICK — The Warwick Valley Humane Society is slashing some of its adoption fees to reduce its overcrowded cat situation.

The incentive program, "Spring Fever Feline Frenzy," changes adoption fees from $100 to $25 for any adult cat age one year and older. Also, there are no fees whatsoever for all special diet and special needs cats.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures," said Suzyn Barron, president of the Warwick Valley Humane Society. "The daily feeding, cleaning and caring for over 130 cats and kittens is costing us far more than we can afford. For example cat food costs us about $530 each month and litter runs about $750. Although we will lose money on the adoption fees we will be saving money in the long run and more importantly, we hope some fortunate cats will find forever homes."

Spring is also the kitten season and "Spring Fever Feline Frenzy," is an all out effort to make room for them.

"We are asking our community for help with our cat clearance sale to help these cats," said Barron. "In addition, we are hosting the Animal Rights Alliance low cost spay and neuter clinic for cats here at the shelter on April 12."

The Animal Rights Alliance (TARA) Spay, Neuter and Return (SNR) certificates are available for Warwick and Chester residents for only $20 because these towns have once again subsidized the SNR Fund for 2014 which will cover the balance of the surgery.

"We are extremely grateful to the towns of Warwick and Chester for their continued support in helping their residents overcome the overpopulation of cats in our communities," said Barron. "This reduces the tragic suffering of newborn kittens and the chronic pregnancies of adult female cats as well as all the nuisance related problems of stray cats. And by the way, if you feed 'em, fix 'em or you are just contributing to pet overpopulation."

Essential Information
The Warwick Valley Humane Society's animal shelter is located at 48 Public Works Road, just off Kings Highway and past the police station.

The hours of operation open to the public are 12 noon to 4 p.m. daily.

All adoptions require approved applications with landlord approval and veterinary references.
