Warwick Valley High School senior organizes LAX Out Cancer event at town park
WARWICK — Warwick Valley High School Senior Kayla Datys, the daughter of Harry and Kathy Datys, has plans to attend Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island where she will major in event management.
Datys is also captain of her High School Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team, a sport she has played for the last four years.
Therefore, it was natural for her to decide her senior project would be to host a "Lax Out Cancer" Lacrosse tournament event on Saturday, March. 23, at the Warwick Town Park.
"Lax Out Cancer" is a lacrosse fund-raising game for children who are battling cancer.
The tournament, which was open to high school boys and girls who play lacrosse or their teams, involved about 60 players from Warwick, Goshen and Cornwall.
And the event raised approximately $1,200 and still counting from registration fees, food trucks and donations to help support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
"I decided to arrange this tournament event," said Datys, "to help fund St. Jude Children's Research Hospital because it treats children with catastrophic diseases and no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay."
Organizing the event, which included food trucks like Lil Fry and Carl's Crepe Shack, required planning and coordinating with both the Town of Warwick and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Datys is also a seasonal employee of Jessica Williamson, owner of the Lil Fry Company.
"I would like to thank all the people who helped make my senior project a success," said Datys. "We still have donations coming in and I hope people will continue to help St. Jude."
