Warwick Valley High School graduate represents NY Maritime College in Albany

WARWICK Carl Fischer, a 2009 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, was recently selected to accompany Rear Admiral Wendi B. Carpenter, president of the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College, to the annual SUNY Day, held at the State Capital in Albany.
SUNY Day was established to attract prospective students and to encourage politicians to vote in favor of laws providing economic benefits to higher education.
Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt had nominated Fischer, the son of John and Johanna Fischer of Warwick, for the schools distinguished cadet appointment scholarship.
Applicant qualifications at that time included a minimum 1100 SAT score and 90 grade-point average. Fischer was also evaluated on his leadership skills through extracurricular activities, as well as school and community involvement.
The annual SUNY Day offered an opportunity for the young cadet to reunite with Assemblywoman Rabbitt. His day consisted of meeting with state senators and members of the Assembly as well as prospective students.
Fischer now serves as the chief indoctrination duty officer at Maritime College. His responsibilities include indoctrinating and training approximately 360 new members of the freshman class while he pursues his own studies leading to a degree in mechanical engineering. The new students, Mariners Under Guidance (MUGS), are taught to conform to the regimented lifestyle.
Maritime College is located on a 55-acre waterfront property near the Throgs Neck Bridge where the East River meets Long Island Sound. The college is located in New York City at Fort Schuyler on the suburban Throgs Neck peninsula.
Maritime Colleges mission is to create leaders in business and professional Merchant Mariners for the shipping industry.
