Warwick Valley Gardeners win state awards

WARWICK — Mary Pohlman, the executive vice president of the Warwick Valley Gardeners and chairperson of its garden therapy program, received the Mary Piraino Garden Therapy Trophy for her work in garden therapy at Mt. Alverno.

This award is presented for the most patient or resident involvement in a program. Since the program began, it has almost doubled in the number of people who participate.

Cathy Garofalo also received a second-place award for her contributions to the club and community in the areas of civic development and landscape design.

The club also received first-place state citations for horticultural therapy, conservation, for the Pine Island butterfly garden, civic achievement and community landscape design.

The club also received a citation for its contribution to World Gardening, a fund that provides wells for countries that do not have clean drinking water.

All of these awards have been sent to the National Garden Clubs for consideration.
