Warwick Valley Community Center announces upcoming programs

WARWICK — The following is a list of upcoming programs and events at the Warwick Valley Community Center:

Yard sale donations

The Warwick Valley Community Center is holding its first annual yard sale - and is asking for your help.
The non-profit center, which serves residents of all ages throughout the Town of Warwick, will hold its sale on Oct. 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
To make it a success, please consider making a donation. Drop-off dates at the center will be on Friday, Sept. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7, from 4-6 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The center will accept everything, except the following: TVs, computers or accessories, clothing, books, shoes and tires.
There will be a box to collect winter coats for those in need.

Healthy Living Workshop

Are you dealing with a chronic disease or limiting health condition? The Orange County Office for the Aging’s Living Healthy Workshop will give you the support you need, find practical ways to deal with pain and fatigue, discover better nutrition and exercise choices, understand new treatment choices, and learn better ways to talk with your doctor and family about your health.
If you have conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, the Orange County Office for the Aging’s Living Healthy Workshop can help you take charge of your life.
Free at the Warwick Valley Community Center Nov. 7 through Dec. 14. Light refreshments will be served.
Mondays and Wednesdays 10 a.m. to noon. Space is limited; register by Oct. 21.

‘Repair Coaches’

Sustainable Warwick and the Community Center are working to launch a Repair Café - a free community meeting place to bring a “beloved but broken” item to get fixed.
“Repair Coaches”— men and women with significant skills — make the repair while you watch …or help. A lot of stuff gets fixed. People leave very happy.
The center will need at least 10 repair coaches to begin the venture in November. Are you, or someone you know, interested in helping others fix things? If so, contact Elizabeth Knight at eknight@teawithfriends.com or 845-544-1056.
Once it starts up, the Café will be held on a Saturday every other month.
“We’re looking for people who have significant repair skills,” said project coordinator Sharlene Miller-Pizza. “Some run their own business and this is a way to get better known. Some are retired --and like to take stuff apart when they were kids. A good Repair Coach is a good listener, a curious troubleshooter and wants to help make the repair - but won’t be frustrated if it’s unreasonable or impossible.
What gets repaired? The top item is lamps (lamp parts are available “at cost”). No. 2 are vacuum cleaners.
Beyond that, anything: mechanical and electrical; electronic and digital; clothing and textiles; things made of wood; jewelry; dolls and stuffed animals, Tool and knife sharpening too.
If it’s broken, bring it.
Repair Café extends the life of stuff you care about and keeps fixable stuff out of the landfill.
The idea was born in Amsterdam in 2009 and has spread all across the U.S. We have Repair Cafes in seven mid-Hudson towns: Beacon, New Paltz, Rosendale, Gardiner, Kingston, Rhinebeck and Poughkeepsie -- but none in Orange County.

Free coffee and tea are planned. Baked treats and fruit are for sale.

Music Sessions

Doc Fry Music Sessions are now being held on most Fridays at the Warwick Valley Community Center.
The sessions are co-sponsored by the Center and Wickham Works, a creative local group of mainly artists and musicians.
Proceeds will go to turning a Center room into rehearsal space that will be available for area musicians.
The concerts feature a wide assortment of solo artists and bands, All ages are invited to enjoy the music and the Maker’s Space where you can make posters, badges and enjoy other creative outlets.
The concerts are alcohol and drug free.
