Warwick Town Board extends tax exemption for Cold War veterans
WARWICK — Veterans from the Cold War era will continue to get property tax relief from the town after the town board voted last week in favor of removing the 10-year limitation in the original law.
Passed in 2008, the original law extended the same tax exemption to veterans of the Cold War era that was given to those who served in wartime. The amount of the exemption is 15 percent of the assessed value, up to $12,000.
The cold war era is often defined as the time from 1947 up to 1991.
The Town of Warwick also offers real property tax exemptions to wartime, disabled and combat veterans and their families. The maximum exemption allowable is 15 percent of assessed value up to $18,000.
The maximum exemption allowable to veterans who served in combat is $12,000.
The maximum exemption allowable to veterans with a service-connected disability is $60,000 or 50 percent of the veteran’s disability rating.
The board voted unanimously to approve this measure, which can be found in the Town Code section 144-4.
