— Town of Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton purchased his American Airlines ticket but on April 14 all the veterans and their spouses flew free from Stewart Airport to Washington, D.C., on Hudson Valley Honor Flight Mission No. 19
Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a 501c3 nonprofit organization which "Honors American Veterans" for all their sacrifices by transporting veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials at no cost to them.
Hudson Valley Honor Flight flies multiple times a year out of nearby Stewart International Airport and Westchester County Airport.
And the organization serves veterans from all the counties throughout the Hudson Valley and the surrounding area.
Sweeton paid $500 to serve as a volunteer "guardian" for three local veterans.
"We had a wonderful day," said Sweeton, "and we were treated to lunch, visited all the memorials and ended our journey at Arlington Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
"We need to get the word out to these veterans that this is a terrific opportunity for our veterans and it's all free," Sweeton added.
EssentialsThe next flight, Mission 20, will depart from Westchester County Airport in White Plains on Saturday, May 19.
The organization hopes to have more World War II and Korean War veterans apply to participate and visit their respective war memorials.
Veterans who served during either of those eras while not serving in the war are also encouraged to apply.
