Warwick students celebrate food day with local fare

WARWICK — On Thursday, Oct. 24, the Warwick Valley Council of PTAs, together with the Warwick Valley School District, helped students celebrate National Food Day.
High school students were treated to a sampling of homemade squash soup, with locally sourced ingredients.
Middle school students were given a taste of apple crisp, made with Warwick Valley grown apples.
And elementary school students were each given an apple, which allowed them to participate in “The Big Crunch” – along with thousands of other people in the United States.
Throughout the country, people organized more than 5,000 Food Day events as a way to nationally recognize a broader grass roots initiative for healthier, sustainable food choices that has been sweeping across the United States.
Warwick Valley schools are fortunate to be surrounded by local farms, providing the opportunity for students to understand sustainability from an early age. Events such as “National Food Day” help promote healthy, affordable and sustainable food.
Special thanks to Pennings Orchard, the Warwick Valley Central School District Food Service Department, and school administration for making it possible for students to participate in National Food Day.
