— In order to provide additional space for its fresh food, local and organic products, Warwick ShopRite on Route 94 South will add an 11,825 - square foot extension to the north side of its facility.
That will increase the store's current size to approximately 68,000 square feet.
The Wakefern Food Corp., which operates local ShopRites, issued a statement that the Warwick expansion is part of a program to improve product delivery and modernize stores throughout the region.
The company recently completed modernization projects at its stores in Middletown and Vails Gate. Construction at the Warwick store is scheduled to begin next month. Completion time will depend on the weather but the store will remain open as usual throughout the work.
The expansion of the Warwick store will take away some of the parking area on that side of the building to the left of the main entrance.
And to compensate for that, part of the building across from the supermarket, which was formerly home to Rite Aid Pharmacy, has recently been demolished to provide another parking area.
The pharmacy had closed about a year and a half ago and the space was currently unoccupied.
Town of Warwick Deputy Supervisor James Gerstner stated that the town supports the project and looks forward to additional job opportunities. He praised the store for its long history of supporting nonprofit organizations along with numerous fund raisers and community events.
"It's been our goal to enhance the shoppers experience through the addition of fresh, local and organic products," said Warwick ShopRite Manager Bernard McGoldrick. "And that is the purpose of this project."
