Warwick Municipal Airport plays host to Boy Scout Troop 45 camp out

WARWICK — The Warwick Municipal Airport may be a nice place for private aircraft owners to park their airplanes and take a spin around our picturesque area from time to time, but it is also a community asset and open to many other uses that benefit the airport and the Town of Warwick.

Most recently, members of Boy Scout Troop 45, on their way to earning their Aviation Merit Badge, camped out at the end of the grass runway adjacent to Wickham Lake on Friday, April 25.

Although they endured some heavy rain overnight, the sky cleared the next morning and the scouts were able to cook breakfast and lunch, take hanger tours and learn about aviation in general.

To earn their badge, the scouts were also required to attend four hours of class under the tutelage of Cessna Regional Sales Director and pilot Steve Kent, the local Boy Scouts of America Aviation merit badge counselor. His son, Chandler, is also a member of Troop 45.

Kent was able to organize this aviation-themed campout with the cooperation of airport Manager Dave MacMillan and the Warwick Airport Pilots Association.

"My objective is to make this airport a wider use resource for the community," said MacMillan. "It's not just a place for the pilots who fly from here. It's an asset for the Town of Warwick."

More than an airport
Throughout the year Warwick Municipal Airport serves as a destination for many aviation centered events such as the annual Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) fly in, the electronic model air craft fly-in and the Ninety Nines women pilots association annual meeting.

But the airport has also hosted both commercial and not-for-profit non-aviation events.

In the past, for example, it has offered the Town of Warwick and private organizations and non-profits a venue for fire equipment demonstrations, town meetings and community days picnics as well as the perfect spot for a classic auto show or other fundraising event.

Most recently huge cement barricades were positioned across the hard surface runway so that a local company could perform an automobile crash test for a safety system that it was developing.

Last fall it was the site of an episode of "The Following," a television drama series staring Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Kevin Bacon.

"We have a lot to offer here," said MacMillan. "It's a beautiful small airport. The views are magnificent. The area is fenced in along with a security gate. And we're all here to help."
