WARWICK — For 20 years, Edward J. Cassin served as the Warwick Little League’s head groundsman. He was committed to the upkeep and improvement of the league’s facilities, making sure that the fields that the boys and girls play on were in the best possible shape.

Cassin, who called Warwick his home for 35 years, passed away last July at Schervier Pavilion. He was 96 years old.

Gone, but certainly not forgotten.

On Saturday, June 15, the Warwick Little League rededicated the Minor boys field in Veterans Memorial Park to Cassin.

Bart Amatetti, president of Warwick Little League, praised Cassin for his tireless dedication and explained that it was time to replace the sign, which had fallen into some disrepair, and to rededicate the field.

He also took this occasion to present a special “Ed Cassin” award to the current Field Supervisor Roger Showalter for his dedication to the fields at Memorial Park.

Cassin was a retired detective of the New York City Police Department-Mounted Division. He was a member of the New York City Police Department Patrolmen Benevolent Association and the Detective Endowment Association.

He had also served with the United States Army during World War II and was a disabled veteran, having received the Purple Heart. He was a member of Warwick’s American Legion Post 214 and VFW Post 4662 and also served as an usher at the Church of St. Stephen, the First Martyr.

Cassin’s wife of 52 years, Anne, passed away in 1995.

He had four children, eight grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, many of whom attended the field rededication ceremony. Many family members were also present when he was remembered at this year’s Opening Day ceremonies.
