WARWICK — On Saturday, July 27, the Town of Warwick Historical Society commemorated the 96th annual George Washington Day Picnic at Lewis Park with lunch, period games, face painting and country dancing among other events.

The weather was excellent and approximately 100 guests enjoyed hot dogs, lemonade and ice pops along with a complimentary lunch in the shadow of the historic Old School Baptist MeetingHouse.

Visitors also had an opportunity to learn country dancing, sample authentic ginger cake and meet historical figures in Colonial dress.

Niel DeMarino of PBS’ American Experience, accompanied by Susan Braisted, served as representatives of the Colonial period of our history.

DeMarino is a Warwick resident who is an accomplished actor, enthusiastic in his love of history and committed to the mission of the Warwick Historical Society.

Many of the children who attended the annual George Washington Day Picnic also participated in Colonial era games such as sack races, stick and hoops, spoon and potato races and the like. And there was also a kid’s craft table with an historical focus.

In 1917 the Historical Society of the Town of Warwick held its first George Washington Day Picnic to celebrate and commemorate the visit of General Washington and his entourage to Warwick’s Baird’s Tavern.

A meticulous record-keeper, Washington recorded this 1782 visit in his journal along with an itemized purchase of grog. Baird’s Tavern is just one of the historical buildings owned and maintained by the Historical Society.”

During the afternoon visitors were also invited to tour Baird’s Tavern and other historical buildings.
