Warwick building professional Thom Woglom featured in AARP Bulletin

WARWICK — While you might not want to acknowledge that you're old enough to receive the AARP bulletin, you'd probably be OK with being on the cover.
Warwick's Thom Woglom recently had that experience.
AARP described the cover story, "In the March issue, AARP Bulletin spills over 90 secrets from experts and professionals that will save readers money, time and hassle."
Woglom was one of the experts who AARP asked to provide tips that a typical homeowner might not know.
His suggestionsHis suggestions ranged from changing the height of the electrical outlets which are typically 16 inches from the ground to 24 inches, which is easier on the back; to installing blinds instead of curtains to keep heat in the house; and installing comfort height toilets which, contrary to popular belief, do not cost more than standard.
The request came from an AARP reporter back in December and the photo shoot for the cover was shot in January.
After 30 years in the home-building business, Woglom had an easy time coming up with useful tips.
The photo shoot, however, was a new experience.
"I found the photo shoot very interesting," Woglom said. "I’m just a guy building houses and I felt like a superstar. I was enjoying being out of my comfort zone — a chance to live in the moment."
Builder and bloggerWoglom wrote about the AARP experience in his blog where he shares his experience with green building techniques and insight about his designs for homes that support aging in place.
In one entry, titled "Build Your Forever Home," Woglom wrote: "I am a universal design artist, meaning, planning homes from 'cradle to grave.' I like Fred Astaire’s statement: 'Old age is like everything else; to make a success of it, you’ve got to start young.' I encourage my clients to build or remodel their first home like their forever home. What a comfort it has been for many of my customers to age and still be able to efficiently and effectively live in their own home.”
