WARWICK — The Warwick Village Board unanimously rejected a motion at its meeting earlier this week to accept a proposal from village engineers HDR to repair the Parkway Avenue culvert and road, which had been damaged during last year’s hurricane and tropical storm.

The proposal totals $100,200. Barry Cheney abstained from voting because the motion involved his employer.

Trustees Bill Lindberg and George McManus agreed with Mayor Michael Newhard to both send HDR back to the drawing board and to look for other engineering companies to do the project.

“It’s a prefab bridge,” the mayor said, acknowledging that the Parkway Avenue project is not a simple repair because the area utility lines and sidewalks.

However, Newhard said he also believes it “can be delivered in a much shorter time span and at a much lower price.”

The vote came after the evening’s public hearing to override the two percent property tax levy cap for the coming fiscal year. That motion passed.

“There’s no indication this board’s intent is to go beyond the cap,” Cheney noted.

Trustee Bill Iurato was absent from the meeting.

Grievance Day for village taxes is Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Warwick Village Hall, 77 Main St.
