Veterans Day services
WARWICK — Sunday, Nov. 11, marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, initially celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919, on the first anniversary of the war.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day. And unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.
Here's how Veterans Day will be conducted throughout the Town of Warwick:
Village of Florida The American Legion Post 1250 will hold services on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Veteran’s Monument, located on Main Street in the Village of Florida.
• Following the service there will be a display of artwork by fourth and fifth graders from Golden Hill School with the theme “What the Flag means to me.” This annual event is sponsored by at the American Legion Post 1250 Auxiliary and is held at the post on Cohen Circle.
• Meanwhile, the S.S. Seward Institute Student Council invites area veterans to its annual Flag Ceremony and tribute to the military on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 10 a.m. at S.S. Seward Institute, 53 N. Main St. in Florida.
Village of Greenwood Lake The Arthur Finnegan American Legion Post 1443 will hold a Veterans Day service on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the post, located at 40 Mountain Lakes Lane in the Village of Greenwood Lake.
• The New York State Remember Our Fallen Memorial Wall is on display at the American Legion Post through Sunday.
The memorial was created by Patriotic Productions, an organization whose mission is to honor the service men and women who have fought and died in service to the United States from the War on Terror back to World War II.
The post is open during the week for visitors at 4 p.m., on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
Village of WarwickThe annual Warwick Veterans Day Parade and Memorial Service is sponsored by the Warwick Valley VFW Post 4662.
The parade will start at 10 a.m. on Main Street in front of Village Hall and will march an extended route this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.
The parade will proceed from Main Street, up Oakland Avenue, left onto Railroad Avenue, right onto South Street, left onto Parkway, left onto Park Lane, and will continue across Forester Avenue, to conclude in Veterans Memorial Park.
• There a service will take place, presented by VFW Post Commander Dan Burger.
• The Warwick Valley High School Meistersingers will perform the National Anthem.
• A Tent Party will be held at Lewis Park on Main Street, following the ceremony.
All are welcome to attend this family-friendly event, which will include food, drinks, and a bouncy castle.
• World War I and Vietnam memorabilia exhibits will also be on display for the public in the Old School Baptist Meeting House.
• In addition, an exhibit that focuses on 1968 and includes the Vietnam War is currently on display at the A.W. Buckbee Center.
