WARWICK — Meet the athletes of the 1965-66 WVHS First Honor Girls Volleyball Team, who helped forge a path for a new and unstoppable wave of female high school athletes.
Back then, says Athletic Director Greg Sirico, there were only a few girls varsity teams.
Now Warwick Valley boasts 13 - including soccer, tennis, lacrosse, track and swimming. The growth of opportunities for young female athletes is arguably the most significant change to high school athletics in recent memory.
In all, the 1965-66 girls volleyball roster was made up of about 10 athletes.
This year, 55 Warwick Valley girls play volleyball on four teams: varsity, junior varsity, freshman, and grade 7-8 at the Middle School.
This photo is part of the Throw Back Thursdays (TBT) project of recently discovered old photographs of the school district and its students from years passed. An image is posted on the district's Facebook page every Thursday (hence the name: Throw Back Thursdays).
Folks can comment on the posts or message the district via FB or e-mail at liramirez@wvcsd.org.
• Can you tell the district more about these athletes or Warwick Valley girls’ sports in the 1960s?
