Throw Back Thursday: school buses

WARWICK — Back in the day, the Warwick Public Schools’ transportation fleet was made up of the five impressive buses in this undated photo.
School officials don’t know anything about these proud drivers, but they suspect that they had something in common with the men and women of today’s Warwick Valley School District transportation staff.
“Our drivers and monitors are true caregivers,” said Director of Transportation Debra Weissman. “They are moms and dads, grandparents, retired firefighters and police officers. They do an excellent job getting our students to school, to activities, and on field trips safely, but they’re also all people who really care about kids.”
Of course, some things have changed:
There are now 75 buses and vehicles, including 10 full-size, energy efficient propane-powered buses and one electric hybrid.
Together they log upwards of 700,000 miles each year.
The fleet - as well as the district's building and grounds vehicles - is meticulously maintained by five expert mechanics.
