The Warwick Foundation for Excellence in Learning raised more than $1,000 at a movie fund raiser

WARWICK — The Warwick Foundation for Excellence in Learning (WFEL) raised more than $1,000 at a fund raiser held Nov. 18 at the Town of Monroe Arts & Civic Center, where the film, "Wonder," was shown.
Two theaters were nearly sold out for the private screening of "Wonder," starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay.
“Wonder” is based on the best-selling book by R.J. Palacio and it is being taught in classrooms around the country. It is the inspiring story of August Pullman, a fifth grader born with facial deformities as he is mainstreamed into a school for the first time.
"Wonder" is a story about kindness, acceptance, empathy and friendship.
In keeping with these themes, monetary donations were also collected for the Warwick Ecumenical Food Pantry, located at 135 Forester Ave.
“We would like to thank our students, teachers and superintendent for coming,"said Vanessa Holland, the chair of WFEL. "Watching this movie together was incredibly moving and inspiring.
“Fund raisers like this help WFEL fund our Mini-Grant Program for our teachers, continue the One Book One School program in our Elementary Schools and help us fund collaborative efforts with our district,” Holland added.
