#TBT: The French teacher

For this week's Throwback Thursday photo, the Warwick Valley School District offers the story of Miss Edith Strohl, who, after graduating from Temple University in 1934 with her journalism degree, headed straight for Montpellier, France. She stayed a while, enrolling in Montpellier University and working at a secondary school as an “assistante anglaise.” She made her way back to the states, hired to teach French and Civics at Warwick High School in 1940 and picking up her teaching certificate at Columbia University along the way. Her Teacher's Record says she lived on Oakland Avenue and her phone number was a simple, three-digit "200." (Or, as she might have said, "deux cents.") We think Miss Strohl would be proud of Warwick Valley’s world languages program, which now offers five-year sequences in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and, of course, French.
