'Support is given from her heart and love for the community'

WARWICK — On Thursday evening, August 24, Mayor Michael Newhard and Ladies Night Out event chair Corrine Iurato continued a longtime tradition when they crowned this year's "Queen for a Day," Susan Dickes, a generous supporter of community and charitable organizations.
Among those joining in the ceremony were Merchant Guild President Tom Roberts and past President Mary Beth Schlichting.
It was the 17th anniversary of this special event held during Warwick's 20th annual celebration of Ladies Night Out.
As usual, Newhard read the winning nomination letter, which was written by Mary Ellen Schmick
"I accidentally met Susan at the local gym," she said, "and have been so impressed by her strength, intelligence, and dedication to our Warwick Community."
Shortly after moving to Warwick, Susan Dickes and her husband, Glenn, began generously supporting worthy organizations and charities including the Ecumenical Food Pantry, the Albert Wisner Public Library, various student scholarship awards, the Rotary and Lions Clubs, the Children's Holiday Party, Back Pack Snack Attack, the Warm Coats drive, the Warwick Valley Humane Society and much more.
"So many of our programs," wrote Schmick, "could never be accomplished without her gracious contributions and support. Just listening to her makes you appreciate her love and commitment to Warwick. Susan never expects public praise or appreciation. Any financial support is given from her heart and love for the community."
The annual "Queen for a Day," winner also receives a valuable assortment of gift certificates and merchandise from Warwick business owners. This year, participating merchants donated more than $1,500 in gifts and services.
And during the ceremony, Newhard read the names of approximately 80 local businesses and organizations that had contributed.
Nomination applications are made available each year at downtown shops and anyone who believes he or she knows a person who deserves the crown is invited to participate. Members of the Warwick Merchants' Guild then review the nominations and select the winner at a special meeting before "Ladies Night Out."
