Summer is here

Village of Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard recently said that he considers the Warwick Fire Department's carnival the moment summer really starts.
And, this year, after a somewhat rainy and cool spring, that proved more true than ever as record crowds enjoyed clear blue skies and summer weather at the Warwick Volunteer Fire Department's annual carnival in Veterans' Memorial Park
It was also the 150th anniversary of the Warwick Fire Department and the carnival was one of many events scheduled this year to celebrate that milestone.
The history of the Fire Department goes back to 1869 when the Excelsior Fire Engine Co. No 1 was organized in the Village of Warwick
The current carnival company, Gillette Shows, has been used by the Warwick Fire Department since 1997.
"They are an amazing family and we love them," said Assistant Chief Michael Contaxis. "Jerry Gillette is a great man and friend to the Warwick Fire Department."
Employing a professional carnival dates back to 1988 and before that there were vendors.
This year's carnival began Wednesday, June 26, and concluded on Saturday evening, June 29, when the crowds showed up, not only for the exciting rides, but also for a spectacular fireworks display.
