Sugar Loaf. Efforts underway to nominate the hamlet of Sugar Loaf to the National Register of Historic Places

Earlier this year, the Sugar Loaf Community Foundation contacted Neil Larson & Associates, a historic preservation planning firm based in Kingston, to assess the eligibility of the Sugar Loaf hamlet for the National Register.

Neil Larson thought the hamlet of Sugar Loaf had good potential and followed up with obtaining a positive determination of eligibility from the New York State Historic Preservation Office.

The significance of the district is based on the buildings that represent the hamlet’s development in the 19th century, but its late 20th-century revitalization as a craft village, along with the commercial alterations that occurred, is now old enough to be historically significant as well.

The Town of Chester has entered into a contract with Neil Larson and Associates to prepare a National Register Nomination Form and get approvals from State and Federal reviewers.

It is estimated that a National Register listing will be achieved in Spring 2024.

The Town of Chester is planning a gathering on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m., at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center Pavilion.
Property owners and other interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Larson will be there to answer questions, as well as ask them.
