Straus publications recognized for journalism and advertising excellence

Seven Straus News publications won a total of 11 media awards within the last week, including Dirt Magazine and its editor Becca Tucker who received awards from two different news organization
The national Local Media Association recognized Dirt as a first-place winner in the Niche Publication category.
In the Best Magazine category, The New York Press Association awarded Dirt second-place and gave it an honorable mention in the Niche Publication Category.
The New York Press Association judges in the Magazine Category said in their comments about Dirt: “Very nice layouts. Good photography and interesting articles. The color palette throughout (screens, type etc) is consistent and appealing. My only complaint: the text is a bit too small and some of the paragraphs are too long. Overall, nicely done.”
In the Niche Publication Category the judges wrote: “A wonderful, diverse snapshot of sustainability issues, an important and growing niche.”
Meanwhile, photographer Robert G. Breese won second place in the art photo category of the New York Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The photograph was taken at night from the Route 6 overlook of shoppers at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets in Central Valley. The judges wrote: “Nice composition on this long photographic exposure of a busy roadway.”
The Warwick Advertiser also received a third-place citation for its small space ad from the New York Press Association. The ad was designed by the Straus News graphics art department for Crystal Pools.
The judges commented: “This is a great example of letting an image or artwork make the sale. No need for a lot of copy, just easy contact information. The picture sells the concept.”
