Step right up

WARWICK As part of her senior project, Warwick Valley High School student Sara Beck has organized a home run derby, called Knock Cancer out of the Park, to benefit St. Judes Childrens Hospital, on Sunday, April 29, at the varsity softball field at the high school.
I chose this as my senior project because I am a softball player, Sara wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Warwick Advertiser. I have played softball since I was five years old. I played little league for 12 years. I played travel ball for five years. I am a third-year pitcher for the high school varsity team.
For another part of her senior project, Sara ran a series of free pitching clinics for eight weeks over the winter for girls ages 7 to 12.
I chose the home run derby because I wanted to do something softball related and this seems like it would be a fun event and everyone can participate regardless of age or skill level, the young athlete added. We will have different distance markers for each age group and for men and women and will have a tee available for young kids or people uncomfortable hitting off a pitching machine.
Sara said she chose St. Judes Childrens Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., because they are a great charity who help kids and do not turn anyone away because they cant pay.
Essential information Knock Cancer out of the Park will be held Sunday, April 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the varsity softball field at the high school. Open to all ages and skill levels.
$5 for 3 balls $10 for 8 balls.
