— On Thursday evening, May 23, almost 100 guests attended the St. Stephen’s - St. Edward’s Educational Trust seventeenth annual cocktail party at the Landmark Inn.

The annual event treats guests with an assortment of hors d’oeuvres, musical entertainment and an open bar for three hours.

One of the favorite attractions each year is the variety and quality of the appetizers created by Mike DiMartino, award-winning chef/owner of the Landmark Inn.

Richard Wiggins, a nightclub-style singer and pianist, also returned to provide the musical entertainment for the evening.

‘Thank you’
Master of Ceremonies was again local radio and television personality Dick Wells. After introducing members of the Board of Trustees, he later joined Wiggins at the piano for an impromptu singing performance.

The Rev. Angelo Micciulla, parochial vicar of the Church of St. Stephen, the First Martyr, gave the invocation and grace before meals.

“It came to mind,” began Edward Scharfenberger, 93, president and founder of the trust. “And yes,” he added, “I still have a functioning mind, that this is our ‘Community Appreciation Night’ and I love and thank you all.”

Scharfenberger then continued with remarks singling out board members, hosts and guests who had been involved with the annual event for every one of the past 17 years. And with Memorial Day celebrations just a few days away, he also invited veterans to stand while everyone sang “God Bless America.”

A celebration
The modest net proceeds from this year’s St. Stephen’s Educational Trust Party was sufficient to break even as intended. The event has never been considered a fund raiser but rather a celebration and thank you for all those who support St. Stephen’s - St. Edward’s Elementary School.

The Educational Trust was created in 1992 to help finance educational programs at the tuition supported elementary school.

The trust invests contributions made throughout the year to help support the school and in the past the monies have been used for tuition aide for poor families, improvements to the school facility and teacher appreciation awards among other projects.
