Some 'Beautiful People' made a stop at Winslow

WARWICK — Children and teens from Warwick-based Beautiful People were invited back again this year for a session all their own at Winslow Therapeutic Riding. Typically, Sunday is the day off for all the horses and the volunteers, but doors were opened to another unbeatable experience. Winslow programs are designed to meet the needs of children and adults with physical, mental, or social disabilities, as well as those who wish to learn about horses and riding in a therapeutic environment. Both organizations are non-profits that team up "beautifully" to make a special event.

Beautiful People provides adaptive team sports for ages 5 and up with seasons of baseball, soccer, and basketball. Each month off-season, a gathering is organized like bowling, indoor swimming, or track and field, and this month horseback riding was a unique treat.

Grace Mazzeo, mom of a 9-year-old participant, said, "John can't wait to go back on a horse! He seemed so happy and relaxed riding. Can't wait to do it again! He even enjoyed grooming the horse!"

Among Winslow's caring volunteers is 13-year-old Brooke Ladka. Brooke's dad, Peter, is the founder and chairman of Beautiful People. She is also a volunteer buddy on the field for Beautiful People baseball. One-on-one, she and other "buddy" volunteers pair up with a special needs players to give as much help as is needed to play. The spring baseball season begins on May 4 and runs through June 29. Games are on Sundays at the Town of Wallkill Little League Park, 99 Little League Way, Middletown. Volunteers and players are always welcome.
