Sing for someone's supper

WARWICK — Are you a tenor or a bass singer or in between?

Dennis English, choir director at the Warwick Methodist Church is forming a group of singers for a June 8 concert to benefit the Warwick Ecumenical Council Food Pantry.

"Last year I conducted a concert at the Warwick Methodist Church and we raised about $1,300 for the Food Pantry," said English. "This year we are putting together another fund-raising concert and find that we need some more singers for the major choral work, Randall Thompson's 'The Peaceable Kingdom.' While all voices are welcome we particularly need a couple of tenors, basses and a soprano or two."

The nucleus of the group is the senior choir of the Methodist Church and other members from the community. The work will be accompanied by Tim Getz.

English was a choral teacher at Spring Valley High School until he retired several years ago. He also conducted a professional five-voice a cappella group in New York City called The DaCapo Singers, which he also formed.

English sang with Hugh Ross in several of his vocal ensembles and performed both in theatre and opera for about a dozen years.

The format of this upcoming concert is to have the choral work be the major work but also have several other ensemble and solo performers.

Essential information
The rehearsals are Thursday evenings at the Warwick Methodist church, 135 Forester Ave.

And before Easter the group will meet only from 8 to 8:30 p.m.
